Town has changed over the years from a silver boom town of the 1800's to a near ghost town and today it is one of the greatest vacation destinations in North America.

Cycling is the main summer pursuit; The Hub has a wide
range of bikes, while Timberline
is the cheapest for
mountain bikes, and also organizes tours. The Roaring Fork River, surging out of the
Sawatch Range, is excellent for kayaking and rafting, but sections can be dangerous and every
summer sees a few fatalities. Blazing Paddles does half-day float trips.
While not the lowest-priced company, they do have a good safety record.

If you love walking in the mountains, the Silver Queen gondola climbs from downtown to the
summit of Aspen Mountain, where guided nature walks can be found or you can venture off on you own for the nature walk of a lifetime.
Occasional free concerts and talks are also held from time to time, and there is always a good
time had at the sundeck restaurant. For another great nature walk try hiking around the Maroon Bells and Maroon Lake just fifteen
miles southwest. The road
is used by locals and visitors alike for rollerblading, biking, walking and even running. The US Ski Team has even been sited on the famous road working out during the summer.

If fly fishing is your thing travel just 20 minutes to the north (down valley) and you come to Basalt, a sleepy little town at the confluence of the Roaring Fork and Frying Pan Rivers.
The Frying Pan River is best know for its
gold medal fly fishing and up the river you will come to Ruedi Reservoir a great spot for windsurfing boating and fishing.
If you continue up the Frying Pan River you will come across Chapman Reservoir which is a great spot for family picnic's fishing or motorless boating.

Carbondale Colorado is a quite little town sitting about 35 minutes south of Aspen down Hwy 82. Carbondale really comes to life when Mountain Fair Opens in July.
This year is the 35th year for this festival and is sure to be a great time had by all. Starting the afternoon of Friday, July 28th and continuing until late on Sunday afternoon,
the music in the park will include great groups for old and young alike. With great groups like Rythms of the Heart,
Steve Skinner and the Natives, Euphorquestra, Frank Martin, Circus, Juice and Wendy Woo.

Carbondale was once a trading town for Mountain Men and Trappers coming down from Aspen, Marble and Redstone. Later it was a mining community and housing most of the miners who worked in Redstone Colorado and the Marble Quarry in Marble Colorado.
Today Carbondale has become a favorite hideaway for artist and craftsmen.

Only an hour south west of Aspen is the small town of Redstone, Colorado. This little town was built by
John Cleveland Osgood to house his workers and their families. The Redstone Inn was built
for the single men and the houses along Redstone Blvd. were built to house the married men and their families.
While Mr. Osgood lived in the Cleveholm Manor now know as the Redstone Castle. It is well known that
John Osgood had a gamekeeper that lived across the river from the Cleveholm Manor and would release
deer to be hunted by visitors. Redstone Colorado rests along side the Crystal River and is surrounded
by large pine forests on all sides.

Aspen Mountain also known as Ajax Mountain by the locals can be seen from miles away with the ski runs standing out all year long.
